Lip Color Tattoo

Are you tired of refreshing your lips several times during the day?

If you think your lips are too dark, too pale, or if you feel that your daily lipsticks make your lips dry or chapped, then it may be time for a change from your traditional make-up routine. If you want to look good at all times and you wish you had some of the natural coloring you had when you were younger, lip color tattooing is the right solution for you!

Frequently asked questions

How long does a lip color tattoo procedure take and what is the process involved?

The total duration of the process is about 1 hour and a half to 2 hours and the steps are described below:

  • Application of a numbing cream

The skin is cleaned by an organic lips scrub and an appropriate cleanser for permanent make up tattoo. A topical anesthetics is then applied to numb your lips for 25 mins.

  • Consultation form

You fill out a client consultation form including a medical history for review by a Registered Nurse.

  • Discussion about the lip colors and the shape

Together we select the color and the shape of the lips that suit you the best. Photos are taken before the procedure for your file. The selected colors are also recorded for future reference.

  • The lip color procedure

The lip liner procedure usually takes less than an hour while the full lip color procedure takes a bit more than an hour. We continue applying the local anesthetics during the procedure to make it comfortable until the end.

  • Photos after the procedure

Photos are taken after the procedure for future reference. You can then compare the results before and after the procedure. At first, your lips look darker and fuller than expected, but it will lighten and soften after healing.

  • Aftercare

You receive aftercare items for your lips and detailed instructions as part of a complete aftercare kit at no additional cost.

Does lip color tattooing hurt?

A topical anesthetic is applied to numb your lips before and during procedure, so very little discomfort is experienced. Most of our clients say that it is irritating but not painful.

How to prepare for lip color procedure appointment?

  • If you have a history of cold sores or fever blisters/herpes simplex, even only once in your life, you will be required to contact your physician or pharmacist to obtain the proper prescription medication to prevent such outbreaks.
  • They are only precautions and cannot guarantee you will not breakout as the Herpes virus is always present in your system. Failure to take the medications could result in a fever blister outbreak, and may cause loss of pigment or infection. This is caused by stress on the lips.
  • If you received lip filler injections, we recommend to wait at least 6 months before having the lip color procedure for better color retention.
  • 1 week before the appointment: Do not remove facial hair around your lips by tweezing, shaving, threading, or waxing.
  • 2 weeks before your appointment: Do not laser around your lips.

I had a lip laser. Can I still have a lip color tattoo?

Yes, you can but you have to wait for at least 2 months because your lips are sensitive. Wait until they are completely healed before making an appointment with us.

What are the aftercare lip color tattoo recommendations?

  • Right after the procedure, lips may appear to have too much color or very vibrant, but the final color will progressively appear over the next few weeks based on how your body reacts.
  • After 1-2 hours, expect moderate swelling, some people might last 1-2 days following the procedure. A frozen bag of peas/cold pad will provide comfort and bring down swelling.
  • To minimize any chance of infection or allergic reaction at home, we will give you detailed aftercare instructions with an aftercare wax to keep your lips moist for 5-7 days, and then switch to Chap Stick.
  • Drink through a straw for the first few days.
  • After 2-4 days, the outer layer of the tattooing will exfoliate. It is important not to disturb the on-going exfoliation process by picking at portions of the lip that have not begun this process. After approximately a week, the majority of the residual lip tattooing has exfoliated off the entire lip area.
  • The lips are somewhat tender and often remain that way to the touch for several weeks. However, when your lips have healed completely, the dermal layer will gradually become darker or brighter than what you want. Lips will not have their full color until 8 weeks of healing. This is why it is recommended to wait a minimum of 4 to 8 weeks before the follow up procedure.
  • Our lips are often in contact with water and saliva which may also wash out the color and they have more blood circulation which accounts for a faster healing than eyebrows. The lip color may also be lighter from tissue swelling and bleeding during the procedure.
  • The color will get progressively darker every day for 1 week after the procedure until the scab is gone, after which, the color will become lighter than the first week and the color will appear more 1 week after.

When are the follow-up and maintenance appointments to lip color tattoo procedures?

A follow-up appointment is normally scheduled within 4 to 8 weeks, depending on your age, to determine how the lip tattoo procedure healed and if any further work is needed because some area might healed lighter from tissue swelling and bleeding during the procedure. Your lips will probably heal lighter than you want, but they can be darkened with a second application of pigment at a follow-up visit (“touch-up”). Because permanent make-up can fade over time, you can schedule maintenance visits every year or few years to keep your color looking fresh.

Can men have lip color tattoo?

Yes, men can have it. Many of them have a problem with dark lip color and they wish they had a natural nice lip color on. Both men and women who are at least 18 years old can have eyebrow tattoos or other procedures.

Pre-procedure information for lips

Cold Sores:
Herpes Simplex on lips

If you have ever had a cold sore, or fever blisters/herpes simplex in the past, even only once in your life, you will be required to contact your physician or pharmacist to obtain the proper prescription medication to prevent such outbreaks.

Precautions to be taken before and after the procedure. Take the prescribed dosage:
  • 2 days before your procedure,
  • the same day as your lip procedure,
  • and 2 days following the procedure. 5 days in total.

The above are only precautions and cannot guarantee you will not breakout as the Herpes virus is always present in your system. Failure to take the medications could result in a fever blister outbreak, and may cause loss of pigment or infection. This is caused by stress on the lips.
After the procedure, a frozen bag of peas/cold pad will provide comfort and bring down swelling. Lips will be swollen 1-2 days.
